The Chrysalis behind the wardrobe (12)

This repeated in her ears like some distant echo or pebble dropped in a pool until it diminished without adequate effect. In her motionless state Aunt Mo. picked up another sound to her right from in the front-room-bed sit-living room she had created for herself in her own home to make more space for eventualities. The sound was of a "ting" quite possibly a "sin-ting" she thought and diverted her attention to her right side. The sound was quiet slightly less than the dropping of a pin on a cushioned lino floor, but it temporarily held aunt ‘M.’s attention. The sound was of a capsule chrysalis breaking out. A mutual fear came over both, from Aunt Mo.  it was fear of a "sin-ting" of which she scanned and identified it to be coming from behind
the wardrobe. For the creature it was a fear of a new beginning, a new dawning as it responded to the effects of spring.
With an unnecessary shriek Aunt Mo.  Called yet another.
"Mi Mi-Mi -rah rah," she sang in an operatic soprano stammer.
The note was sharp with an inflection on the "r".  Leroy took no notice; in fact he wilfully ignored her. It was his time in his patch and the spring morning would not spoil any inflections, least of all from.
"Madam Butterfly down stairs", he thought. He had been through the operatic performance far too many times to get involved today. Leroy’s rhythm had changed it was a faster beat his beat rapped, it jingled and it
had a real patter. The chrysalis behind the wardrobe felt the same. Aunt Mo. shifted her weight slightly from her rotund left hip to her complimentary right hip without moving her feet that was now undergoing a bout of pins and needles. With little muscular effort Leroy raised his sash window and gazed out at the haze of green leaves tinted with sulphuric ash from the nearby something factory, beyond this he could see the rows of tower blocks inhabited by unknown people. It was a beautiful morning he thought.
With a deep breath he filled his lungs with something mixed with the natural air of the inner-city.
The Chrysalis behind the wardrobe shuffled.  As the force of spring
moved it on.   It was then Aunt ‘M.’s thoughts settled to her usual topic her beloved husband Ivan, who had since passed away.
"That wretched man, if only he hadn't bought that three piece suite 14 years ago, I would have had a different one now. Oh! Well what's done is done as Ivan would say. I could never understand why he spoke the way he did. I-mean-to-say it was not that he wasn't an educated man he had passed numerous exams from the third grade in school." Her thoughts meandered.
"Some-how-I-mean," she thought in her own uncertain way.
"We are middle class people living in a good part of town. We have always kept up with the Simits across the road. They were not better than me” Aunt Mo. convinced herself, despite being uncertain about that now worn settee. Aunt Mo.'s sonic beam was broken again to her right. The chrysalis of spring shuffled out of its encrusted form and was searching for food.
Leroy was now fully clothed in his brightest gear, he had shaved shampooed and showered he was now applying a scent that would attract anybody even if purely out of curiosity. The scent was a concoction of
everything that smelt sweet that was at hand. The base fluid for this mixture was his mothers' lavender water of which he felt to be extremely refreshing applied all over. Leroy sprayed his outer garments with air-spray and a faint whiff of furniture polish to add that manly vigour to his scent. He decided to give lunch a miss as he would pick up a hot dog or a Jamaica Pattie and a can of bubble mint flavoured drink down the road. Leroy was ready to meet the world with a power and a glory that such a day deserved.
He shadow boxed and ran on the spot causing considerable oscillations that developed into a broader wave motion that set the dust flying and the ceiling to flake down stairs. The floor boards creaked as he shadow boxed his reflection that he so dearly loved. Yet another operatic pitch reached its climactic pinnacle as Aunt Mo. widened her full row of alien protruding incisors, the pitch of the screech was in "E" minor the duration of the note was for thirty seven seconds.
